Welcome to my new blog! it supplements a few of my other blogs which are mostly devoted to narrower views on things like strategy and marketing. For example, I've got a CRM blog, a CEM blog, a branding blog, and a case studies blog. That's a lot of blogs.
The reason I wanted to put out Business Strategy Today is that it provides the frame for all my other activities. I do a lot of teaching, speaking and training, plus a lot of writing, and every time I do it, I'm exploring a different part of the elephant of strategy (not all parts smell good; not all parts are impressive for the reasons you might think). We're all blind people groping around the critter. This blog is intended to give a road map to this oversize pachyderm of a problem: How do you compete in a global, networked world?
What makes it tough is that prospects and customers can talk -- and they do. And, that products and services ain't what they used to be -- what does Facebook sell? And, that companies can either be swamped, or saved, by what I call the five forces of Customer Experience Management. Move over, Michael Porter. There's a new way of looking at things, and it explains a lot more than old frameworks.
So, we'll dig into:
1. Why Wal-Mart failed in Germany. And why I'm looking very carefully at what they do now in China.
2. Why Cloverfield (the movie) had a terrific opening weekend, despite an excruciatingly economic promotional campaign. And, as a footnote, it's now made more money overseas than here in the USA -- in just three months.
3. How Apple gets to "own" a color, and what that has meant for its laptop sales.
4. What makes Lego great, and what the company has in common with Salesforce.com.
5. What the long tail has to do with your PR and product strategy, and why you have to make friends with bloggers.
Sort of an odd list.
But, they're all different parts of the elephant. You'll see!
